What is Coprophagia?
Coprophagia is the practice of eating stool and is normal in dogs in specific situations. Coprophagia is a behavioral problem that can be successfully eliminated at home with the use of For-Bid™, and consistent behavior modification training. There’s nothing more disgusting (and embarrassing) to a pet owner than seeing their dog eat its own or another dog’s stool, to then have them running up, tail wagging, looking for a big fat kiss.
What Causes Coprophagia?
There are many factors that lead to eating poop, but they usually stem from something to do with your dog’s health or behavior. On the health side, eating poop may be a sign your dog lacks certain vitamins or enzymes, causing them to turn to their poop to try to supplement these. Underfed puppies or overfed adult dogs may also ingest feces to aid digestion.
Behavioral poop-eaters are also common.
Some behavioral factors that can cause coprophagia are:
- Anxiety
- Habit
- Environment
- Attention
- Boredom
- Fear
How to stop Coprophagia?
Providing your dog with high-quality dog food at the same time(s) of the day, with the recommended dosage of For-Bid™ will most likely be all you need to stop this nasty habit (just be sure to check with your vet before administering anything). Be sure to put in the time to address any of the behavioral issues listed above and create a clean and healthy living space to decrease their temptation eating poop.
While you may not be able to prevent coprophagia each and every time, understanding what it is can help pet parents avoid dangerous poop-eating incidents.
