Unfortunately, our pups cannot learn spoken languages, so it’s about time we learn how they do communicate. There are a lot of instances where we think we know exactly what our pet needs or is trying to tell us, but sometimes, we’re completely off the mark. And guess what, that’s OK! They know you still love them, but why not learn some ways they do communicate, and improve your relationship?
Here are 10 things your dog wish you knew about them:
- Please don’t leave your pup alone all the time. They understand that you’re probably working or you’re busy, but they get bored easily. Why don’t you consider taking your dog to doggy daycare or hiring a dog sitter a few times a week? And when you get home please make sure to give them plenty of love!
- Not all tail wags are created equal. Simply put: they’re not always happy when they are wagging their tail. Sometimes when your dog wags their tail it means they’re happy, but sometimes it could mean they’re scared, insecure, or even angry. So, try to learn the differences between their different tail wags.
- Your dog doesn’t really love crowded places. Even though they are social animals, dogs can get overwhelmed and scared when there are a lot of people vying for their attention.
- Dogs respond to rewards, not punishments, so be nice – even when you’re mad. If you give them treats for doing something good, they will keep doing that good thing. But if you just yell at your dog and point at things when they do something bad, they won’t understand you and probably won’t stop their bad behavior.
- Your tone affects your pup more than you think. Even though your dog prefers body language to words, that doesn’t mean they don’t understand your tone when you talk to them. Your dog actually enjoys the sound of your voice and even if they don’t understand the words, they can guess the meaning from your tone of voice.
- Your dog doesn’t remember things like you think they do. As any normal pet parent, you think you have the smartest dog! We’re not here to tell you you don’t. BUT if your dog does something wrong, it’s important to address it right away. If you don’t address the issue until later for something they did earlier, they won’t know why they’re in trouble.
- Dog’s can sense how you feel. Yes, it’s true, they have a sixth sense! Your dog not only knows how you feel, but they will feel the same. They are happy when you’re happy and stressed when you’re stressed. So try to be aware of that next time you’re sweating the small stuff.
- Eating poop is pretty normal (well sort of). We know it’s gross, but don’t freak out! There could be a variety of reasons why your dog is eating poop, but consulting with your vet and adding the recommended dose of For-Bid™ to their diet, this nasty habit will be gone in no time!
- Dogs have “bad” days too. It probably just means they’re bored. If your dog is acting out of control, jumping up on you or grabbing household objects and running around like a crazy, it probably just means they’re bored and want to play. Why not take a break and have some fun with them? They love to play with you!
- Yawning doesn’t always mean your dog is tired. While yes, sometimes yawning can be the international sign for tired, dog’s will also yawn when they’re scared, agitated, or overwhelmed. If you notice your dog is yawning a lot, try to pay attention to the environment they’re in, so you can make some changes for next time and help them feel more comfortable.
Always remember no matter what your dog loves you and wants to spend as much time with you as possible. They are so thankful to live with you and receive your love and attention everyday!
